Environmental Sustainability

I assess the environmental and social impacts of projects before decisions are made, and design measures to avoid, minimise and offset them, in line with national law and international standards such as the IFC Performance Standards.

I lead or contribute to every stage of the assessment, from scoping and baseline studies to impact prediction, management plans and disclosure. I make sure the assessment meets national approval requirements and, when a project seeks finance from development banks or international lenders, their safeguard standards too, so one study serves both.

I identify the physical and transition climate risks facing projects, organisations and communities, and design measures that build their resilience.

I screen climate hazards and vulnerabilities, assess exposure under different climate scenarios, and translate the results into practical measures and investment priorities. For organisations seeking concessional or blended finance, I also assess their eligibility and readiness, and I help regulators and companies disclose climate risk in line with international recommendations.

I design adaptation and mitigation measures with communities, companies and governments, so that climate action also delivers local benefits.

I work with the people who will live with the results to choose measures that fit local priorities, from nature based solutions to risk transfer instruments such as parametric climate insurance. I connect each measure to a source of finance and to indicators that show whether it is working.

I assess how a project, policy or organisation contributes to sustainable development across economic, social and environmental dimensions, including the Sustainable Development Goals.

I look at trade offs and synergies across the three dimensions, identify who benefits and who bears the costs, and propose changes that increase the overall contribution to sustainable development. The result helps decision makers compare options and report on their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals with evidence.

I review projects against the IFC Performance Standards and other lender requirements, and close the gaps that matter to financiers.

I carry out gap analyses against the IFC Performance Standards, the safeguard policies of multilateral development banks and the Equator Principles, and prepare the action plans that close those gaps. I also prepare companies for lender due diligence, so they can approach development finance institutions with confidence.

I assess how the effects of several projects and pressures combine over time on the environmental and social components that people value.

I define the valued components with communities and authorities, map past, present and foreseeable projects in the area, and assess how their effects add up. I then recommend shared management measures and the coordination needed between companies and government to keep cumulative effects within acceptable limits.

I design and strengthen environmental and social management systems so that organisations manage risk consistently across their operations and portfolios.

I set up the policies, procedures, roles and monitoring that turn commitments into daily practice, aligned with ISO 14001 and the IFC Performance Standards. For financial institutions, I design systems that screen and manage environmental and social risk across the whole portfolio.
